‘Divine decadence, darlings’

It seems remiss to indulge in a Liza love-in without mentioning the most important aspect of her Cabaret attire – these perfectly painted green nails. In fact, Liza-as-Sally’s evolving nails enhance and strengthen aspects of her personality – when paying a visiting to her father they are discreet and natural (positively virginal, don’t you think?), when meeting first Brian and then Maximilian for the first time, they are painted a shocking green (almost unheard of in Weimar Berlin)…and are, of course, the starting point for flirtatious conversation.

Sally’s talons are bang-on-trend for AW11, as nail shades evolve from summer’s pastel heavy hues and green becomes the must have shade of the season. Backstage at Chanel (a consistent talon trendsetter since THAT Jade Green shade that debuted at the AW 2009 shows) the models nails were painted with Graphite, a metal-coloured shade shot through with iridescent green and anchored with just the right amount of sparkle.  Chanel’s fall nail collection (that also includes Quartz and Peridot) was created by resident make-up maestro Peter Phillips whose metallic creations added depth to Karl Lagerfeld’s smouldering set.

But if getting your mitts on the elusive and in-demand Graphite proves to be nigh on impossible, fear not, because there’s some new shades in town. Carbonite (from Revlon) is a not-so-subtle homage, but Butters London have taken the shade, made it their own and named it Wallis. Taking inspiration from Ms Simpson herself, it’s a slightly more intense shade with a saturated and tarnished olive-tone base that would surely meet with the approval of Sally Bowles.
